Sustainability Policy
A shared responsibility
Orangebox recognises that the world has reached the point where natural resources are declining at an untenable rate, and that climate change, and biodiversity loss are key drivers in the need for a fundamental rethink to ensure our planet’s future prosperity.
As a company whose economic viability relies on the long-term sustainability of materials, we understand that building a future which more effectively balances economic and environmental outcomes is crucial for our long-term business prosperity.
We believe that whilst the transition to significant decarbonisation cannot happen overnight, this needs to be a key aim for our business for the coming decade as our part of a global shared responsibility to combat climate change and all other related human impacts on the planet.
Acknowledging our impacts
Whilst Orangebox continually strives to improve people’s work-life through world class innovation and design, we also recognise that as a producer of products that utilise materials and energy in their manufacturing and transportation, almost everything we do currently has a negative impact on the planet.
Our aim is to systematically reduce these impacts over time by applying a range of strategies that influence the way in which we design, manufacture and distribute our products.
Two key goals & actions to deliver them
We are working to ensure that all Orangebox products and the business models that support them aim to keep the materials we use at the highest value, for the longest time possible. We do this as work towards being a restorative and circular business.
We also recognise the need for significant decarbonisation across our organisation, and have set a a 50% absolute reduction target of emissions from operational energy by 2030.
Our aim is for Orangebox to be fully net zero as soon as possible (by 2050 at the very latest).
We have implemented a broad range of measures to help us deliver these two key aims:
- Assigning dedicated skilled resources to the management of sustainability across the business and the implementation of a strategic decarbonisation plan that prioritises the reduction of our most significant impacts
- The continued application of an ISO14001 compliant Environmental Management System to deliver continuous improvement in resource efficiency, minimising waste & reducing environmental impacts including greenhouse gas emissions
- The continued application of a range of eco-design tools that are applied to all new developments to lower the carbon intensity of the products we make, to promote long life cycles in use and to give thorough consideration to ‘second life’ outcomes as a key part of our design process. (More detail is outlined in our Sustainable Design Policy)
- The development of new business models and services which promote longer life cycles in the first instance and the most effective outcomes for used Orangebox furniture
- To help our customers make informed choices with clear information about the environmental performance of our products and our business
- To act with transparency & integrity when communicating about sustainability and our progress towards decarbonisation
- To work with our supply chain to help reduce the wider, product related carbon emissions that fall outside of our immediate (operational) impact. Through engagement and knowledge sharing, encouraging our key suppliers that don’t already have decarbonisation targets in place to do so in line with the science
- We promote the use of digital meeting tools instead of physically traveling & where a face-to-face meeting is required, low carbon alternatives to car travel will be used wherever possible to do so
- Adoption of the UN Sustainable Development Goals as the key framework in ensuring we operate with consideration to financial, natural and social capitals, both locally and globally
- Providing our employees with the training & support required in tackling climate change & helping Orangebox deliver on its wider sustainability goals
